Sold Out -- Again
Rob Ham
Apparently it is much easier to talk about peace at a thousand-dollar-a-plate campaign fundraiser then it is to bring it about on the floors of Congress.
Once again the Democrats have melted like a jell-o mold at a Fourth of July picnic when stared down by the bloodthirsty Bush Administration. It looks now as if they are going to give Bush his war funding and troop withdrawal has been unceremoniously tossed into the dumpster.
The Bush/Cheney Regime have their war. Wall Street has its arms and petroleum profits. Children of working people and the poor have their opportunities as well: they have the opportunity to be killed or crippled, physically and emotionally, for the sake of the military industrial complex. Iraqis will continue to exercise their newfound "freedoms," though a simple trip to the market puts them at risk of being shot, kidnapped or blown to bits. And the blood of children will continue to flow freely down the streets of Baghdad.
The Democrats would be well advised to remember the circumstances of their return to power in Congress. They were elected to end the war, pure and simple. If they think they are going to hold on to the progressive, crossover and independent vote with the cowardly behavior they have displayed thus far, they are sadly mistaken.
This war is killing our kids. God knows how many Iraqis have lost their lives. The Bush/Cheney invasion of Iraq is going to put us so deeply into debt that our economy may never recover. As we have seen with Hurricane Katrina and the Kansas tornados, our own people are at risk in time of disaster because the National Guard is so heavily deployed in Bush’s Middle East meat grinder. The war in Iraq is a complete debacle, born of lies and corruption and, for the most part, unchallenged by Democrats, except a handful of heros -- individuals like Representative Barbara Lee (D-Oakland).
This war is also killing our democracy. The neo-con controlled Bush Administration is using this war as an excuse to continually stiflle political descent, and the Democrats seem intent on letting that happen, too. After all their promises and all of their high toned pontificating, they simply dissolved at the first fight.
Senator Harry Reid said that no one could say, with any degree of veracity, that progress hasn’t been made. Well, to the Senator I say, with no small amount of veracity, that if we the people are going to pay another $95 billion dollars for the privilege of watching our kids come home in bags and at the end of the day, there will be no peace. There will be no democracy. There will only be bloodshed, grief and hate. The people have spoken and the Democrats have gone deaf. Better listen up because if you don't, all hell is going to break loose.
Stop war funding and bring our kids home now!
